Petropavlovsk, often called Petropavl, is a city in northern Kazakhstan, the administrative center of the North Kazakhstan region. The city has quite a rich history associated with Russian and Kazakh heritage, and plays an important role in the economy, culture and education of the region.

Foundation: Petropavlovsk was founded in 1752 as a Russian fortress on the border of the Russian Empire for protection against Kazakh tribes. The city is named after the holy apostles Peter and Paul.
