Aksu-Jabagly nature reserve
Southern Kazakhstan • Kazakhstan • 2000 m
Aksu-Zhabagly is a place where you can truly experience the wild nature of the Tien Shan. The reserve is located in southern Kazakhstan, near the border with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, and is considered the first of its kind in Central Asia—it was founded in 1926 and is now listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve unesco.org.
Here, green valleys, rushing rivers, deep gorges, and snow-capped peaks all come together in a single landscape. The main natural attraction is the Aksu Canyon, up to 500 meters deep, with impressive sheer cliffs. In spring, the slopes are covered with wild tulips, and in summer, it’s a great place for easy hikes and enjoying nature.
It’s important to note that this is a strictly regulated nature reserve: visits are only permitted with a permit and when accompanied by a guide. You cannot pitch tents, build fires, or wander off the designated trails. It is precisely thanks to these rules that nature here has been preserved in its pristine state.
The tour usually begins in Shymkent with a transfer to the village of Zhabagly—the main entrance to the reserve. Accommodation is arranged in cozy guesthouses with home-cooked meals and mountain views.
The best time to visit is from April to September. This is the perfect option for those seeking tranquility, unspoiled nature, and a unique experience far from mass tourism.
