Kara-Kamysh lake (Kara-Suu lake)
Jalal-Abad Region • Kyrgyzstan • 1990 m
Kara-Suu Lake (Kara-Kamysh) lies within the beautiful landscapes of the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve, in a neighboring valley not far from the famous Sary-Chelek Lake. The lake stretches for about 1.3 km and is known locally as Kara-Kamysh, meaning “black reeds,” a name inspired by the dark vegetation growing along its shores. On most topographic maps, however, the lake is labeled Kara-Suu, which translates as “black water.”
From this tranquil valley, hikers can reach Sary-Chelek Lake by crossing the Kudarmashu Pass (2,446 m). This scenic mountain route is usually accessible from May to October and offers impressive views over the forested slopes and alpine pastures of the reserve.
During the summer season, several yurts are set up near the lake where travelers may stop for a meal and sometimes find a place to spend the night. Those who venture farther into the gorge can enjoy more authentic encounters, meeting local beekeepers and nomadic shepherds who spend the warm months in these high pastures.
The hiking track climbs along the eastern shore of the lake, offering beautiful perspectives over the water and surrounding mountains. On the way to the lake, visitors can also admire the picturesque waterfall of the Kara-Suu River, a refreshing natural highlight before reaching the calm waters of the lake.
