The Hat of the Great Alexander
Sughd • Tajikistan • 3330 m
In the majestic Fan Mountains of Tajikistan, not far from the legendary Iskanderkul Lake, stands a striking peak known as the “Hat of the Great Alexander”. Officially named Rain Gauge “Dojdemernaya”, this mountain rises to 3,342 meters, dominating the southern shore of the lake with its steep, dramatic walls. Its unusual shape, reminiscent of a hat, is said to have inspired its legendary name.
To the east lies its towering neighbor, Peak Isterek, with an altitude of 3,491 meters, while to the west are the traditional villages of Sarytag and Kanchoch, offering glimpses into local mountain life. The area is rich with hiking opportunities: a variety of trails and dirt roads circle the Hat, providing routes suitable for both casual walkers and experienced trekkers.
One particularly scenic hike runs between the Hat of the Great Alexander and Peak Isterek, starting at the shores of Iskanderkul Lake and continuing toward the old Kanchoch mines, a historic mining site that adds both cultural and geological interest to the trek. Along the way, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the turquoise lake, rugged mountain ridges, and vibrant alpine flora that carpets the slopes in spring and summer.
The Hat of the Great Alexander is more than just a peak — it is a blend of natural grandeur, historical legend, and cultural heritage, making it an unmissable destination for travelers exploring the Fan Mountains.
