Jailoo
Chong-Suu (jailoo)
Chuy Region • Kyrgyzstan • 2100 m
Located northwest of Kyzyl-Oy village, Chong Suu Jailoo is one of the most colorful and authentic summer pastures of the region. This wide valley stretches toward the Kumbel Pass (3,367 m), which connects the area to the vast Suusamyr Valley and offers spectacular mountain scenery.
At around 2,200 meters above sea level, several small family farms are scattered across the valley. These farms are surrounded by forage fields and humid meadows that contrast with the otherwise dry and arid surrounding landscapes. Higher in the valley, along the Chong Suu River, nomadic families settle during summer, setting up their yurts and bringing their livestock to graze on the rich alpine pastures.
The valley is framed by impressive mountain ranges. To the north rises the striking red Sandyk Mountain, whose name means “Chest,” reaching an altitude of 3,992 meters. To the south stands part of the Suusamyr Too range, dominated by Peak Aktöbö, which culminates at 3,736 meters. The combination of green pastures, red rock formations, and abundant alpine flowers creates a remarkably vibrant and picturesque landscape.
Chong Suu remains largely untouched by mass tourism. While a few traditional yurt camps can sometimes be found, the area retains its wild and authentic character, making it an excellent destination for travelers seeking solitude and immersion in nomadic life. Camping is often the best way to fully experience the valley.
Thanks to relatively light snow cover during winter, horseback riding is possible throughout most of the year, offering a unique opportunity to explore the jailoo in all seasons.
Accommodation is available in Kyzyl-Oy village, where the local Community-Based Tourism (CBT) association offers several types of homestays and guesthouses.
