Altai (Bayan Ölgii)

Welcome to Altai (Chihertey, a charming village nestled in the picturesque Bayan-Ölgii Province of western Mongolia. With its rich history, stunning geography, and vibrant economy, Altai offers a fascinating destination for travelers seeking adventure and exploration.

Established on February 12, 1959, Altai district boasts a population of approximately 3983 people as of 2014. Once part of Jargalant and Sagsai in Khovd Province, Altai has grown into a thriving community over the years.

Located 110 kilometers west of Ölgii, the district's center, Chikhertei, serves as a bustling hub of activity. To the southwest lies the serene Darihan Nuur lake, adding to Altai's scenic beauty.

Agriculture reigns supreme in Altai, with the local economy revolving around livestock farming. As of 2015, the district boasted an impressive 120,650 livestock, including cattle, sheep, horses, goats, and camels. In addition, the locals cultivate vegetables such as potatoes, contributing to the region's agricultural diversity.

Despite its rural charm, Altai is not without modern amenities. Since 2001, electricity has been provided to the district through a 10 kW hydropower substation, enhancing the quality of life for its residents. However, it's worth noting that sewerage services are still limited, with only 50% of households currently connected.
