Kandahar city

Kandahar City is the second-largest city in Afghanistan and is located in the southern part of the country. The city count around 500'000 inhabitants. While the city has a rich history and culture, it has been affected by conflict in recent years.

Kandahar was founded near the ancient city of Mundigak established around 3000 BC. It has a rich history and was occupied by various conquerors including the Achaemenid Empire, Alexander the Great, Indian emperor Ashoka, the Ghaznevid Turks, Genghis Khan, and the Mughal Empire. Ahmad Shah made it the capital of his new kingdom in 1748, but the capital was later moved to Kabul. Kandahar has been a center of jihad and mujahideen activity and was occupied by British forces during the First Anglo-Afghan War. It was under Soviet rule during the Soviet invasion from 1979 to 1989 and later became a stronghold of the Taliban movement.

There are several historical and cultural sites in Kandahar City. These include the Citadel of Kandahar, which dates back to the 12th century and was once a major center of commerce and culture in the region. The city is also home to several mosques and shrines, including the Shrine of the Cloak, which is believed to contain a cloak that belonged to the Prophet Muhammad.
