Kara-Suu Gorge forms one of the wild and scenic valleys of the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve. In its upper section, the river is known as the Kyzyl-Suu, which rises at the foot of the impressive Chatkal Range. Here the landscape becomes more rugged, with wide grey cliffs and steep mountain slopes framing the valley.

The eastern side of the gorge is covered with dense forest mixed with juniper, creating a rich and diverse ecosystem. In spring and summer the alpine meadows are filled with numerous species of wildflowers, while the forests and cliffs provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife typical of the Western Tian Shan.

During the warm season, many shepherd families settle in the valley with their herds. Around their summer camps, it is common to see not only sheep and goats but also horses, cows, and donkeys. Many of these pastoralists are also beekeepers, placing rows of colorful beehives near their yurts to produce the fragrant mountain honey of the region.

From the Kara-Suu Gorge, several trekking and horseback routes lead toward Sary-Chelek Lake or across the surrounding mountains through a series of high passes to the east. For experienced mountaineers, crossing the rugged ridges of the Chatkal Range itself remains a real challenge, offering remote and rarely explored alpine terrain.
